| It
was in the year 1975 that Geetha dashed in to the
tinsel town through “WASANA”. Thus she became
an indispensable component of the commercial cinema
of the country. Her
career leaped into a different tempo with “Maruwa
samaga wase”(Living With Death) screened in 1976.
Until then she had concentrated her acting career on
entertaining films.
This paved her way into the
artistic category of films. The late Vijaya Kumarathunge
was then and awe-inspiring commercial actor. Geetha,
along with Vijaya created a new trend in the
commercial cinema with films such as “Anjana”
“Jayasikuru” “Jaya Apitai” “Raja
wedakarayo” etc. More importantly however,
she was gaining reputation as an actress of substance,
playing pivotal roles that transformed the face of Sri
Lankan women.
She
manifested a remarkable facet of her career with "Pembara
Madhu", “Podi
malli”,"Siribo Ayya", "Sathara
Diganthaya" , "Karumakkarayo", "Palama
Yata", "Loku Duwa" & "Ran
Diya Dahara" .
Even
as a new actress, she raised eyebrows by playing roles
which were considered controversial. She
saw no logic in films that portrayed two people in
love but avoiding physical sensuality. .
Geetha
has acted in more than 80 movies so far
including Sinhalese, Pakistani, Hindustani, Two
Japanese and one French productions. She has often
accepted roles about downtrodden and abused women who
are unable to break their shackles.
